School meals

A healthy and balanced diet is important for learning and we offer a range of nutritious school meals to keep our pupils fuelled for the day.

Food and Drink Expectations

Drinks

Students are only allowed to bring the following drinks into the school:

  • Plain water (still)
  • Flavoured water (still)
  • Milk

The school only sells the drinks listed above. The water and flavoured water must be clear and see-through. These items must be in a clear plastic bottle. These are the only types of drinks that are acceptable within the school. No energy or fizzy drinks are permitted and all drinks must be under 1 litre in capacity. Water fountains are available throughout the school for students to refill their bottle outside of lesson times.

Food

Students have a designated restaurant in school and they must eat their lunch in the area in which they purchased it. They are not permitted to take food onto the corridors or outside. Packed lunches must be kept in a lunch box, container or bag and must be eaten in the year group designated eating area. Drinks, which are part of a packed lunch, must meet the drinks requirements outlined in this policy.

We are a healthy school and as such, the following items of food are not allowed in the school:

  • Large bags of crisps i.e. grab bags/share bags
  • Large bags of sweets
  • Multipacks of chocolate bars
  • We encourage students to bring items such as fresh fruit/vegetable portions. Further ideas on healthy packed lunches can be found here.

Any items not permitted will be confiscated and must be collected by parents within 48 hours before being discarded.

Chewing gum is not permitted in any aspect of the academy site; any student found chewing will be issued a C5 consequence and any chewing gum will be confiscated.

How to apply for free school meals:

Free school meals are managed by your local authority. To check if you qualify and to apply, please click here. If your application is successful, both you and the school will receive confirmation and the entitlement will be processed automatically.

Who is eligible for free school meals:

To be eligible for free school meals, you must receive one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit (not Working Tax Credit) with an annual income below £16,190
  • Pension Guarantee Credit · Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)
  • Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying)
  • Universal Credit with a household income of £7,400 or less (after tax and excluding benefits)
How to pay:

We operate a cashless catering system, where students use a swipe card to pay for meals. Funds can be added via ParentPay, our online payment platform. To avoid payment delays, we recommend using the standard card payment method rather than the one-click bank transfer, which can take up to 10 days to process. Follow these steps to top up your child’s balance:

  1. Log in to ParentPay.
  2. Select your child’s name and click ‘Pay for Meals’.
  3. Enter the amount and add to your basket.
  4. Click the trolley icon and proceed to checkout.
  5. Choose ‘Other Payment Method’ and enter your card details.
  6. Click ‘Review Payment’ and then ‘Pay Now’.
  7. Check your email for confirmation from platform@parentpay.com.
Bringing a Packed Lunch

Pupils are welcome to bring a packed lunch from home. We encourage healthy choices such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain foods to support their learning and wellbeing throughout the day.

Being Aware of Allergies

If your child has any dietary requirements or allergies, please inform the school so we can make suitable arrangements.
